Board Chairman’s Message

MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE STUDENTS LOAN TRUST FUND – MR ANDY OSEI OKRAH

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, and on my own behalf, convey our sincere gratitude to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for this singular opportunity to render unqualified and dignified service to students of this country in particular, and by extension, mother Ghana in general.

As Chairman, I pledge our unflinching commitment to stay the course and make good our mandate and functions, spelt out in the Students Loan Trust Fund Act, Act 820, 2011 section (6), which includes, but not limited to: “appointing a team of professionals for the efficient management of affairs of the fund”.

I hasten to state that the Board unreservedly identifies with the vision of His Excellency’s administration in mainstreaming issues of tertiary students, and featuring same prominently for accelerated socio-economic development.

The 13 member Board of Trustee of the fund is a fine fusion of industry players and academia, and given our wealth of experience, we are under no illusion that though challenging, we will live up to the billing and not in any way compromise on standards.

The unwavering Board will be steadfast in delivering on its core mandate and acquit ourselves creditably at the end of our tenure, to justify the confidence vested in us.

We would like to encourage employers, the direct beneficiaries of the scheme, i.e. students, other stakeholders and indeed the entire citizenry to embrace the scheme because a cry of distress from our direct and immediate beneficiaries, students, is a summons to rescue.

Such is our resolve; the Board is poised to provide the needed visionary leadership by way of deploying strategies to ensure massive repayment from beneficiaries and explore other potential sources of funds in order to expand the Fund to reach many targeted Ghanaian students.

The Board, in the medium to long term, will roll out a series of programs and activities designed to engender financial self-sufficiency, and we are convinced of success and triumph in the projected programs.

We are firmly rooted in the conviction that financial autonomy will bolster public confidence in the Trust and thereby encourage increased public participation in our programs.

This is our challenge, deemed a social contract with the good people of this country intended to wean the scheme off subvention into a truly self-financing entity capable of meeting the ever increasing demands and aspirations of our constituents since it is a revolving fund.

This noble ambition can however not be achieved without the active involvement and participation of all, notably the business community, on whose experience we would draw in the drive and campaign towards sustainable self financing.

We will not belabor the critical role the fund had played and continues to play in the lives of students, especially those from low income earning families. But even as we take onboard increased numbers, the Board remains committed to this core mandate, and determined to increase the coverage and leverage of the amounts.

Guarantors must be helpful and ensure repayment of the loans on time to avoid any unpleasant harassment.

This Board promises to work diligently and cohesively with the Management of the Students Loan Trust Fund and the Sector Ministry in a manner that could only be beneficial to the intended target group: students.

As chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Students Loan Trust Fund, I remain committed to the ideals of the Government and core values of the Fund and highly determined to transform the fund to its rightful place in the scheme of financing tertiary education in Ghana as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Long live students of Ghana, and long live Ghana.
